NU IMAGE: What convinced you to be one of the first doctors in the U.S. who said ‘yes’ to performing SmartLipo?
Dr. Marino: I’ve worked with lasers in surgeries for over 20 years. I know how they work and what they can do. The laser causes less trauma and better results in the process of removing fat. It’s better technology.
NU IMAGE: Why would someone choose SmartLipo over traditional Liposuction?
Dr. Marino: It’s smoother results. The best benefit is skin tightening which gives the smooth look. The other plus is that there is very little downtime. I’ve had patients go back to work the next day which would not have happened with traditional liposuction.
NU IMAGE: What has been the most surprising thing you have discovered about SmartLipo since first doing it?
Dr. Marino: How much it can do. Look at the before and after pictures. I’ve done several women in their 50’s and 60’s with amazing skin tightening in an extremely short time period. One had a 3 inch pannus (hanging, excess fat) and at her 8 week check up, her abdomen was flat.

Dr. Marino: We can do a little higher BMI’s than we originally thought. When I’m treating larger people, I use an additional technology, which is also very gentle, called Vaser. But I still use SmartLipo to tighten the skin.
NU IMAGE: What body areas can be treated with SmartLipo?
Dr. Marino: SmartLipo can be used on any area where traditional liposuction can be used.
NU IMAGE: What about anesthesia and the pain factor?
Dr. Marino: We use only local anesthesia. Most patients do extremely well with minimal pain meds. Some patients have not requested anything at all for pain. We have a very beautiful, sterile surgical suite and patients find the experience quite comfortable.

Dr. Marino: We now offer the newest non-invasive technology in body reduction, called VelaShape. It can give a significant reduction in just four weekly treatments. Dr. Marino: That’s true. We’ve had patients from other states, plus foreign countries. One, a soldier from Iraq, arranged her leave schedule so that I would be the surgeon performing it.
